Am I really that uneducated?

Posted on July 24th, 2008.

This week our neighbors have been on a mission trip and we have been getting their mail for them.  They just got home tonight and the husband came over to get their mail.  I asked how the mission trip was and he began to tell us all the amazing stories of children and a man accepting Christ.  He said they went to the Navajo Nation and I just nodded and continued listening.  While he’s talking my brain is going crazy trying to figure out where in the world is the Navajo Nation.   Here are all the thoughts that were going through my head:

-Is that in Mexico?
-I can’t ask that what if it’s in Europe?
-I’ll ask how long of a drive it was.
-I can’t ask that either, what if you can only get there by air or sea!
-Bill knows where it is, he always knows!
-If only I knew which continent it was on!

So we finished talking with my neighbor (which by the way we have GREAT neighbors. . .just a side note and no they don’t read this) and Bill went back to work (he works from home) and I ran to my computer.  Of course I immediately Googled “Where is the Navajo Nation.”  Can I just say I love Google.  I Google everything I don’t know about and learn so much (salad spinners, Navajo Nations, how many calories in a cherry, etc.).  So I was amazed to find out it was in the United States yet they have their own government.  I’m still boggled by this but whatever.  So, I went back to Bill at his computer and ripped his headphones off (he wears them while working so he doesn’t have to hear all of our noise) and said, “You mean to tell me these people live in America and have their own government.”  He hates it when I don’t know history (which I’m pretty sure this was not taught in my town) and said I had to be kidding him.  I told him, “Look, I’m 30 years old and this is the first I’ve heard of these people.  Why isn’t anyone else taking a mission trip there?”  He said they were but it sounds like (from what my neighbor said) it is a very unreached group of people.

The point of this post is to say we should definitely be praying for this nation that I didn’t even know existed and do whatever we can to tell them about Jesus.  My second point is to see if I’m really that big of an idiot.  Did everyone else know about this but me?  If you didn’t know either can you please let me know.  Otherwise I’m going to have to call the Texas Education Agency becuase I think my high school diploma might be invalid!

  1. I know it is quite SHOCKING, but I have no idea what you’re talking about. It probably has something to do with the fact that I refuse to watch the news cuz of all the bad stuff on there AND…I did happen to go to the big LISD as well!! Oh well, thanks for bringing it to my attention.

  2. I did not know about it, either. Like Chay said, I did go to the same school you all did, and I don’t remember it being talked about. So, no, you are not the only uneducated person out there about this people group. We should know more about them.

  3. Well… our Illinois Baptist All-State Youth Choir just got back from their annual tour, and we visited the Cherokee Nation in Tallequah, Oklahoma, and yes, your bro-in-law was ignorant about the different American Indian Nations and the fact they are sovereign nations.

  4. I did know about it, but I have family from there. Really, my grandfather is buried in the Navajo National Cemetary. Remember the trail of tears from TX history?

  5. Don’t feel bad…another Jones by marriage didn’t know that either…haha

  6. Don’t worry. I didn’t know that either until we moved to Alaska and I worked for tribal government.

  7. Makes me wonder what else we missed with our Lancaster education…
